FAQ schema and AI search: what still works

FAQ schema will no longer get a rich result from Google. In August 2023 Google limited who could get rich results from FAQ schema to well known government and health pages. Then on 7th May 2026 Google stopped giving FAQ rich results to any site. Google also state that AI Overviews and AI Mode do not require any additional markup. The only real reason to pay for structured data is to tell people who you are, what you are selling and who wrote the page using matching markup. Content gap analysis: find the topics competitors are cited for

A content gap analysis finds the topics your buyers search for and ask about where a competitor shows up, and you don’t. For AI search, run it on Google and on AI answers together. Look for the questions where engines cite a competitor or a third-party site instead of you. Then create a page, improve one, merge two, or earn a mention on the site being cited. Most content gap tools compare your keywords with a competitor’s. You still need that check, but it only covers Google rankings. In an AI answer, a competitor can be named even when you outrank them, and a third-party review can be cited ahead of you both. This guide shows how to find gaps in both places and turn them into a short list of pages to write, fix or merge. llms.txt and Google Search: What It Does and Doesn't Do

Google confirmed on 15 June 2026 that llms.txt and similar files “aren't needed for Google Search (and won't negatively or positively impact your visibility or rankings)”, and its AI Optimization Guide states that “You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search”. llms.txt remains a legitimate community proposal at llmstxt.org, aimed at inference-time use by LLM consumers, with vendor-dependent value. Publish one if it is cheap, but budget it as optional infrastructure, never as a Google visibility tactic.
